"Art reaches out across humanity, to have conversations without the need for words. Art builds communities and connections through sensing instead of thinking.
In my hands, the rigid material of stone comes to life and forms fluid, organic shapes that dance with energy. I create curves and openings in a solid mass and challenge the stone to survive thin and delicate expanses, seemingly contrary to the medium. My current work is a tapestry of my journey as a sculptor. Abstraction, nature and figurative realms are the inspiration. I want the viewer to see the weaving of these 3 elements in my work. The spiraling crevices of an abstract seashell, the curling petals of a calla lily woman, and the subtle contour where hip meets waist are all forms present in my sculpture. Walking around each piece, one can find the balance between hard and soft, nature and construction, and the peace in which the sculpture was created. I hope that in experiencing these pieces, this feeling will be passed on to the viewer."
Born in 1959 in the Boston area, Elisa is a first-generation Albanian-American. As a child, she loved to paint or draw with oil pastels. But art was not an option as a career in her traditional family, so she chose to use her hands in another way. She has been a successful Doctor of Chiropractic, since 1984. Still, into her 20’s, she continued to express herself with fiber arts, weaving, and quilting.
In her mid 40’s — missing creativity in her life — she enrolled in a local museum school and took a community class on carving stone that rekindled her deep artistic chord. But it turned out to be the last class before the school closed the next year! Not dissuaded, she continued her journey through self-taught exploration. A second career was born, as a mid-life, emerging artist. Now Elisa has won numerous awards.
